Coach Hall: A day in the life

His day starts at seven a.m. when he pulls up to the field house. He has an hour and 25 minutes to chat with his wife or run his daily chores, like washing the football jerseys, before he plops himself into the green chair outside the weightlifting door. Football coach Bill Hall’s days are booked from morning to night with more than just coaching sports.

Coach Hall has been Northwood’s head football coach since 1989. Every day before practice, Hall prepares notes from the previous games for the players to work on.

“Sometimes it’s just things I feel they need to clean up, and sometimes it’s things I see they do out on the field during a game,” Hall said. “Either way, I get them to work.”

During the school day, Hall has weightlifting first, third and fourth period.

“Every day I have lunch in my wife’s office,” Hall said. “Today we had Bojangles.”

Each week in his weightlifting classes, Hall has his students work on something different so they will strengthen different parts of their bodies.

“Most of my kids have had this class already or are my football players and know the drill,” Hall said.

Hall encourages the players on the football team to enroll themselves in weightlifting. He particularly encourages them this year since he does not have a conditioning class (a class for football players to work specifically on football workouts) on his schedule.

During second period, (his free period,) Hall runs errands and works on his to-do list.

“Today I am going to be counting all the jerseys for the JV and Varsity teams,” Hall said.

Every day after school Hall has football practice from four to six p.m. He ends up staying later so he can work on what the football teams needs.

“I leave school around 7 or 7:30 p.m. every day,” Hall said.

The seven managers of the football team say they enjoy working with Hall.

“After every game and after every practice he always says ‘We have to keep getting better,’” junior manager Summer Chegash said.

Once the football season ends, Hall begins preparing the football players for the upcoming season. Since this year is the first year for Northwood’s team to be a 3A team, Hall knows what he wants the team to work on for the upcoming season. Hall does conditioning after school every day in the weightlifting room.

“Come January we’ll start after school lifting for the football players and any other athletes,” Hall said. “We have soccer, cross-country, basketball, baseball and anyone who wants to come can.”

Hall has not only coached football, but other sports as well.

“I have coached pretty much every sport at Northwood. You name it, I probably coached it.”
