Spring sports wrap-up

Softball

Softball was eliminated by Northern Guilford 1-0 in the first round of the state playoffs.

The team finished 20-2 overall in the regular season and 13-1 in the conference. The team was the number one seed in the conference going into playoffs.

“The season went great this year. We all became so close with each other. It was the best team I have ever been a part of,” sophomore Mckenzie Allgood said. “I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to play with them this season and I can’t wait to see what next year has in store.”

Baseball

Baseball was eliminated by Hunt High School in the first round of the state playoffs by a score of 7-3. They finished 10-11 overall this season, and 9-5 in conference.

Seniors Garret Scott and Trevor Hackney and junior Jacob Sipe were all named All- Conference this season.

The team came together to produce a solid record for their first year in 3A.

“Our team was more than a family,” junior John Atwater said. “Our bond alone allowed us to accomplish goals that seemed impossible.”

Girls’ soccer

The girls’ soccer team finished with a winning record of 13-6 overall, and 10-4 in the conference. Cardinal Gibbons eliminated them in the 2nd round of the state playoffs by a score of 2-0.

“This was probably the most talented team that I’ve seen in my years at Northwood,” head girls’ soccer coach Kevin Tanceusz said. “We had a great defense, a strong offense, and a great team personality.”

Seniors Hailey Pister and Dana Walker, junior Jamie Palermo and sophomore Paige Marro made All-Conference this past season. Marro, Pister, and Palermo also made All-Region.

“The season ended in a disappointing loss, but I couldn’t be more proud of these girls and the way they played throughout the season,.” Tanceusz said.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse finished 8-8 overall this season, and 3-3 in the conference. This is a major improvement from last year’s record of 3-13 overall and 2-8 in conference. The team was eliminated in the first round of state playoffs by Jacksonville High School, 16-15.

Seniors Wesley Meyer and Rob Hamlet, and juniors Jack Dalton and Tyler Romel made All-Conference. Freshman Wesley Roberson was named All-Conference honorable mention.  These 5 helped contribute to the development of this years record.

“I enjoyed being a part of the first winning season of NHS Lacrosse,” Roberson said. “I also enjoyed being a starter on the varsity team as a freshman.”

Track

     The Girls Track team finished 5th in the conference with a total of 44 points.  Junior Alex Council made All-Conference in the Girls 100 meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Freshman Tessa Sheets made All-Conference in the Girls Pole-Vault.

The boys track team finished 4th in the conference with a total of 80.5 points. Junior Imoh Udoh made All-Conference in the 200-Meter dash and the boy’s long jump. Junior Tristan Cochran made All-Conference in the Boys 800-Meter run. Sophomore Jack Maynard Made-All conference in the boys Pole Vault, and junior Darius Cole made All-Conference in the boys Triple Jump.

 Boys’ Tennis

     The boys’ tennis team finished with an overall record of 7-8. They were ranked 6th in the conference this year.

No. 1 seed Senior Zafer Estill made All-Conference this season.

Senior Cody Norris expressed his feelings towards the season.

“Tennis this year was amazing because I got to compete with some of the top schools in the state,” Norris said. “I also got to hang out with some of the coolest guys in the world.”
