Key Club members attend regional conference

The Northwood Key Club went to a conference held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham Mar. 13-15. Students came from Key Clubs all over North and South Carolina.

Key Club is a service organization that works closely with projects such as the Eliminate Project through UNICEF, the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the March of Dimes. The group usually does one service project each month.

At the conference, the students had the opportunity to learn more about the duties of those in the club.

“They gave a lot of presentations on what officers roles are,” junior treasurer Evie Hoffman said. “They gave us more ideas on other service projects we can do, and they also had training for members.”

There were also elections held for the district board.

“[Sophomore Julia Burger] was elected to be Lieutenant Governor, which means that she will now be able to communicate between all the schools that participate in Key Club in our area,” Hoffman said.

According to Burger, it was “a great honor” to become Lieutenant Governor. With her new leadership position, Burger will have more responsibilities within the organization.

“I will be the liaison between the executive board and many different school clubs,”

Burger said. “I will be responsible for attending many board meetings and different conventions.”

This summer, Burger will be attending the Key Club International convention in Indianapolis.

At this month’s conference, participants were able to see the reach of Key Club across the Carolinas.

“Before, I didn’t really see how large-scale the club was, but at [the conference] there were just so many people from Key Clubs and everyone was really dedicated to it,” junior Kirby Morris said. “I guess it just showed how big of an [organization] it is.”

According to students, the conference was a beneficial experience.

“We got to learn more about the values of Key Club,” Burger said. “We participated in a small community service project. Most of it was learning about other schools and seeing what they’re doing, and pretty much just coming together to see our progress over the year.”
