Homecoming Hurricane: Hurricane Matthew causes schedule changes

Northwood’s Homecoming football game was moved to Thursday Oct. 6, the Homecoming Dance has been moved to Oct. 21, and the pep rally is to be determined.

The movement of these events have affected both students and staff members.

“People have put a lot of time into pulling these things off, and having to make switches at the very end of it makes this challenging,” Student Council advisor Henry Foust said. “You kind of have to figure out what needs to change and what needs to stay the same.”

It takes a lot of people to respond to schedule changes such as this one, and for some students and staff the changes have been a challenge as well as beneficial.

“It’s actually given us more time to plan, but we’re worried that people aren’t going to be as excited for the pep rally since it’s not leading up to the game,” said sophomore Katie Fuller, Pep Rally Committee member.

Northwood’s cheerleaders and Dance Team are responsible for planning the Homecoming Dance as well as performing in the Pep Rally.

“It gives more time for people to buy tickets and Homecoming t-shirts, so in a way it’s a benefit,” varsity cheerleader Brianna Stubbs said.

“It allows us some time to clean up the routine,” cheerleading advisor Heather Davis said.

The change in schedule has affected more than just students.

“It began to affect people outside of the building because that’s what Homecoming’s really supposed to be, bringing the alumni back,” Foust said. “I just found out through Facebook that one of the graduating classes have already planned their reunion, and part of their reunion was [supposed to be] going to the game on Friday.”
