Toys for Tots: Chargers bring Christmas to local families

Christmas is a very exciting time for most families and children. However, many children do not receive any toys or gifts. By one simple action, the Northwood community has been helping local children enjoy the Christmas season.

Toys for Tots is a program sponsored by the Marine Corps and gives underprivileged kids an opportunity to have a Christmas. The kids and families who are receiving these toys do not usually have a Christmas without the program.

Before this year, junio, Morgan Simmons has spread the Toys for Tots program throughout Northwood by herself. This year, Simmons has started a Toys for Tots club for others to join and help out.

“[Toys for Tots] has gotten so big now that I can’t do it myself,” Simmons said. “I want it to live on in Northwood because there is a lot of people here at Northwood and Pittsboro who enjoy Toys for Tots.”

Simmons has been spreading the Toys for Tots program locally and has participated ever since first and second grade.

“My mom asked me what I wanted for my [ninth] birthday  and I told her nothing, and she said, ‘Why don’t you do Toys for Tots?’” Simmons said. “We got a lot of donations. We asked people at her work and all my friends that came to my birthday party brought me a Toys for Tots gift and it was a really big hit and that’s what I’ve done every year since.”

Anyone can donate from now until tomorrow, Dec. 9. Boxes are located around the school at the front office and by the bus lobby. Any toys are accepted for either boys or girls up to age 14.  Some examples of items include: board games, sporting equipment, dolls, stuffed animals, backpacks, jewelry, balls, books and handheld electronics.

Those interested in learning about the program, participating or joining the club can contact Morgan Simmons.
