While going to school Monday through Friday can be draining, many students tend to lose interest or focus by Friday. Northwood High School wanted a way to change this for the students so that they can be engaged but still have fun during the week. In the past years at Northwood High School, students and teachers had Plus 1, where students went to a class in the middle of the day for 30 minutes. In those 30 minutes, students would study whatever class they had that day. This year, Northwood switched it up, using the last day of the week to add “Fun Fridays.”
Last year, Northwood High School adopted the idea of “Fun Friday” every Friday for the 2024-2025 school year. The time could now be used for student groups and clubs to meet – allowing students to do something during the week that they usually don’t have time to do. Fun Friday offerings included a variety of options, including yoga, basketball, book club, chill room, HOSA, workout, Dungeons & Dragons, and more.
“I have fun with Mrs. Faulkner and it is a great club for people who want to have a chill and have a fun time,” said senior Leila Sabbagh “We get to play many fun games like Monopoly, Uno, Spades, etc. I really enjoy it.”
“I think it is a good thing that Northwood is doing this because every Friday it helps me get through the day because I have something to look forward to,” said Nivan Lauano, Northwood sophomore.
The Northwood High School administration adopted this idea because it let students interact with different students and do various activities that they usually wouldn’t be able to do during the week.
“We wanted to use the time more wisely and wanted kids to be a part of a club no matter what they had going on in or outside of school” said assistant principal Adam Lutterloh. Northwood administration wanted students to be a part of a club all the time but many students didn’t have the time after school to participate in activities.
“I am in Fun with Foods with Chef X and I think it is a great club, but I wish it was a little longer considering we only have 30 minutes.” said junior Briana Graham.
In the upcoming school year, there will potentially be some changes coming to Fun Friday.
“We are looking to do Fun Fridays on Monday and Friday, which would be a fun Monday and a Fun Friday all in one week,” Lutterloh said.
