Campus Organizations Have Students become Teachers

Despite attending classes every day for years, many students don’t understand what it’s like to be on the teaching side of the equation. Thanks to programs led by students and teachers, some Northwood students are taking charge to help their communities with educational community services.

The student-led club Creating Clear Choices in Science (C3S) writes educational articles to appeal to the interests and curiosities of middle and high school science students.  The goal of Creating Clear Choices in Science is ¨to spread knowledge about science going on and to keep kids in the know about science,”  according to C3S vice president Avery Spradley. C3S is completely student-run, with all of its articles written by and for Northwood High School students. C3S is accessible to people of any degree of scientific knowledge.

“It is for anyone who is interested, anyone who wants to learn,” Spradley said.

Another way Northwood students get involved with education in the county is through the dual-language volunteer program. Through this program, headed by Northwood Spanish teacher Christopher Lupoli’s, students in the advanced Spanish classes spend the day helping the North Chatham Elementary School teachers and students with their dual-language classes.

¨I want my students to see the dual language program we have in the county, and I want my students to see how we teach Spanish,” Lupoli said. The program isn’t just for the benefit of the elementary students. High school students learn many important skills during their teaching trip.

“It is my philosophy that the best way to learn something well is to teach it,” Lupoli said. “It is difficult for the students, but they learn a lot of Spanish and they become a lot more confident when they speak in front of a class,” Lupoli said.

Whether they’re sharing their passion for science or serving as role models for the younger students in our community, Northwood students are taking charge in the community to create a more engaging environment for every student.
