Giving Back: Seniors open donations to Leukemia and Lymphoma research

Since Jan. 26, seniors Sophie Cook and Maddie Allen have been working together to raise $50,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society [LLS]. Together, they are running for student of the year, and are trying to raise as much money as possible in a seven-week period for cancer research.

All of the money donated will go directly to LLS to help better the lives of cancer patients and survivors, and will help fund research to finding a cure for cancer. Cook and Allen are running against 16 other teams in the triangle area, and are working hard to raise money.

“I first got involved in LLS because of Maddie Allen,” Cook said. “We’ve been friends forever, and she ran last year but lost, so this year she asked me to join her.”

So far, Cook and Allen have raised almost $10,000 towards their $50,000 goal.

“Our mission is to not only raise the most money, but also to bring attention to blood cancers like leukemia,” Cook says in her fundraiser description. “Many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases.”

Until March 16, Cook and Allen’s fundraiser will be up and running for people to donate money towards LLS. You can donate here. On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Kendra Scott store at Southpoint Mall will be holding a ‘Kendra Gives Back Party,’ where 20% of the total proceeds will benefit Cook and Allen’s campaign.

“We both have family and friends affected by cancer so this is near and dear to our hearts,” Cook said. “[I] wanted to join the campaign to help change the lives of cancer patients and survivors.”
