Madison Makes Up Your Mind: Northwood’s advice column for the masses

The end of the year is just around the corner and I’m here to provide advice for all Northwood students. I answered questions about classes, college and catching up on sleep.

How do I get more sleep?

Dear Sleepy the Dwarf,

Good question, honestly the only way I’ve been able to catch up on my sleep is to have an online class for first and second period and then wake up at 9:30 everyday, so, have fun with that.

So I’m graduating this year and I couldn’t be more excited, but I’m nervous about the process and worried that I won’t fit in. I love the institution that I chose because they have my major, I just don’t think I’m fully ready for the transition. Any advice on how to be confident in starting a new chapter?

Dear Worried About The Future,

After going through a bunch of satirical answers, I was really glad to see this one! I would recommend taking a deep breath and realizing that a bunch of other people are in the same situation as you. I have quite a few friends that are unsure if they will fit in at their college of choice. I would say that you should recognize the fact that you are going there because you love the school and it is where you decided was the best fit for you. There will be people you can get along with when you’re there, they just might not be the advertised students for your specific school. Good luck!!

What is your view on the new plus 1 pass rule?

Dear Generic Northwood Student,

If I’m being honest, it doesn’t bother me that much. It is a couple of extra steps that makes things a bit more difficult but I’m a senior in my last semester so I could care less about something I didn’t use too often anyways. If you want more information and student opinions about the PlusOne process changing, check out our article on it in our next issue!

I really love history but all professions that involve history are in declining demand. Should I still try to do something with history or do something else?

Dear Future US Historian,

I can really relate to this, I want to be a journalist but I know the majority of them barely make a livable wage. However, I think that if you’re truly passionate about going into this field, go for it. If it feels like something you’re supposed to do then you probably are supposed to pursue it. I think there’s no use in not trying and if your exact plan doesn’t work out, there’s always going to be something you can do, like teach! I would say if you’re still unsure, start thinking about a double major, that way, there’s still something you can fall back on! Good luck!

How do you tie a shoe?

Dear Did No One Bother to Teach You Basic Skills?

First you tie the two shoe strings together, then you make a bunny ear out of both strings. After that, tie them together and there you have it!

I have an insane amount of school work and homework this year, and I am afraid that I will burn out before I get to senior year. What should I do to prevent that from happening?

Dear Probably Taking APUSH/AP Lang,

I know exactly how you feel. I took AP Lang last year and I felt like I was dying the entire time. However, the only thing that got me through was the idea that it will all blow over soon, just become unaware of time. We’re a stone’s throw from the end of the year so hang in there!!
