Fridays of the Future: A new perspective on Climate Change

On September 20th, I attended the first Fridays for the Future walkout. My dad thoroughly encouraged me to walkout on this day, I could see that I would disappoint him if I chose to go to school on this day. Because of my dad’s passion for the protection of our planet, he has inspired me to feel the same way. Being at the walkout, I had a new understanding of the impact climate change has on our world and especially future generations. My photos portray the anger children of all ages feel in regards to the lack of action towards climate change. Greta Thunberg has inspired so many people today.

I really believe that protecting the Earth is one of the most important issues today, if not the most important. Although there is nothing we can do to reverse the present state of the environment, we can do everything humanly possible to prevent the situation from expanding. In Pittsboro, a small town about 20 miles south of Chapel Hill, it’s hot almost all year long. The first week of October, many after school events were cancelled and some schools nearby were delayed due to over 100 degree weather, that was fall. Now it’s December and temperatures are still fluctuating, one day it’ll be 34 degrees and the next it’s 70 degrees. Remember, climate change and weather aren’t the same thing but whacky temperatures can go to show the obvious change in climate. People in the world still don’t believe climate change is real. People constantly hate on Greta, but she’s literally a 16 year old girl with aspergers who has already been awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize, TIME Person of the Year-2019 and so many other awards. If you aren’t a Greta Thunberg fan or don’t agree with her passion to speak out against climate change then you can at least rely on facts; out of 19 of the hottest years recorded, 18 of them have occurred since 2001. If that isn’t proof enough of climate change, I don’t know what is.

Mankind has really done it this time, there’s no going back, California continues to burn, the East coast is retreating, hurricanes continue to strengthen, bats in Australia are falling out of the sky due to heat, polar bears are invading Russia, sea levels are rising and it is really hot outside. With unlimited resources, I would do everything in my power to improve the state of the Earth, starting with simple environmentally friendly strategies and gradually increasing the level of environmental protection in the world,. Bbeginning with the elimination of all paper and plastic bags and making it a requirement to only have reusable bags. Energy would be replaced with some of the fastest growing renewable resources in the United States, such as wind and solar. I would support everything reusable, sustainable and recycled -including ethical fashion, food and energy companies.
