What’s up with the Traffic Circle?

Work has started on the Pittsboro traffic circle. A deal was reached back in the October of 2020 with Raleigh-based contractor Carolina Sunrock LLC to mill and resurface about 250 feet of asphalt around the traffic circle. This means that they will remove the top layer of asphalt and replace it with a newer, smoother coat. The deal was valued at 2.48 million dollars. The town of Pittsboro is expected to finish construction in October of this year, weather permitting.

The traffic circle is located at the intersection of the US 15-501 and the US 64 Business highway. The town is hoping to make the intersection safer for both pedestrians and drivers. This is just the first phase of improvements the town is making to 15-501. In later phases, the town hopes to widen lanes and construct roadway along about two miles of 15-501. The town will be installing detours as needed around the circle. A detour for trucks is set for the NC 87 and US 64 bypass. The Town asks that drivers be mindful and aware of workers during the construction.
