Key Club’s Environmental Awareness Challenge

Members of Northwood’s Key Club recently participated in an environmental awareness challenge to celebrate Earth Day. Below, are highlights from members projects.

“Flowers are amazing for our environment! Not only do they provide a visual appeal to people, but they can also remove pollutants from our air. During photosynthesis, flowers absorb carbon dioxide and then put out oxygen. Flowers also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies! Today I planted many different flowers to help better our planet.” -McKenna Snively

“I cleaned up trash at an area surrounding the Haw River to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the waterway. My group spent a couple of hours and we cleaned up dozens of bags of trash!” -Brynn Dodge

“I had veggie wraps for lunch and they are completely vegan! Eating vegan helps the planet because when you are not killing animals or using them for product than it can help reduce your carbon footprint. And there are so many delicious vegan foods! I also always use a reusable water bottle instead of going through plastic water bottles which creates plastic waste. 80 percent of plastic water bottles end up in landfills and it is very harmful for the environment since plastic takes so long to decompose. I will definitely continue using reusable water bottles and I will try to eat more vegan meals. I would encourage anyone to do these things too! It is so important to support the environment and to keep it clean because this is our home and a clean environment is essential for a healthy living!” -Annaclara Kappelman

“I’m wearing a completely thrifted outfit (shirt, jeans, shoes, ring), which encourages circular and sustainable fashion that’s good for reducing pollution.” -Beckett Brantley

“We decided to carpool to practice together because it will reduce carbon emissions in the long run.  We will continue to carpool to practice because we’re going to the same place and it is better for the environment.  It is super important to prioritize the health of our planet because it’s the only one we have and it is home to not only humans but also millions of plants and animals.  Happy Earth day!” -Caroline Allen

“For the environmental challenge, I planted some flowers outside to attract pollinators like butterflies & bees. The bee population is rapidly declining, so my hope is that my small contribution will make an impact in the local bee colonies!” -Grace Burns
