Recap on Student Council Elections

Student council elections for class representatives of the 2021-2022 school year have concluded as of May 20, though results have not yet been announced. Voting was eligible for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors on May 17, May 18 and May 19. The Omniscient interviewed student council candidates to see how they felt about the election.

Rising junior Savannah Matthews has run for junior class senator, and like many of the other students running for student council interviewed, Matthews is feeling good about the election.

“I know that a lot of cool people with good ideas are running,” Matthews said.

Executive positions such as Student Body President and Student Body Vice President were decided in a previous election. Student Body President of the 2021-2022 school year is rising senior Kennedy Poston. She says she appreciates connecting with the students at Northwood through student council.

“My favorite thing about the council is definitely being able to plan projects that the student body will enjoy, along with being able to meet new people and listen to any feedback they can provide,” Poston said.

Student body vice president for next year is rising senior Lindsey Torres. Torres shared her opinion on why she is excited to learn about the election results.

“I’m interested in seeing how the competition in the rising junior class plays out, since there are three people running for one position,” Torres said. “This year, there will be only girls on the executive council, so I’m also interested in seeing how a female-dominated executive will play out. I’m excited to recruit rising freshmen too!”

There was no election for rising freshman class representatives on May 17, 18, or 19, but there were a couple of rising sophomores running for a position. Rising sophomore Kaylee Fisher has run for Sophomore Class Officer of Fundraising.

“Next year, I am looking forward to hopefully getting students engaged with school again and getting them excited to participate in their learning environment,” Fisher said.

Rising sophomore Alison Burger ran for the position of Sophomore President, and was Freshman Senator last year.

“I think being able to bring fun and helpful projects to the student body is my favorite part of StuCo, and the community that the student council brings,” Burger said.

There are three students running for Junior Officer of Class Involvement, one of them being rising junior Airryn Wharton. This is the first year Wharton has run for a position on the council.

“I have decided to join the student council because I would love to give back to my peers and work with the students and teachers to make sure that each project that is presented to them via student council is 100% and brings everyone joy,” Wharton said.

Rising junior Allyson Palmer has run for Junior Class Officer of Community Service.

“I’ve always been kind of shy about being in a leadership position,” Palmer said. “I felt like this was a great opportunity to try something new.”

Running for Senior Class Senator, Rose Hopp says she is ready for the 2021-2022 school year on student council.

“I am looking forward to being able to make next year a year never to forget,” Hopp said. “Especially since it will be the first ‘normal-ish’ school year after Covid. I cannot wait to plan many fun projects for the student body.”

Rising senior Anna Beck is running for Senior Class Officer of Fundraising.

“I am excited to do many ‘senior’ based activities for our last year at Northwood,” Beck said. “I am also feeling great about the election and am excited for next year!”
