New Baking Club Prepares to Stir Up Success

There are many new clubs at Northwood this year, but one that has drawn lots of attention is The Mix Up club, a baking program that helps homeless shelters in the community. The club—run by juniors Kylie Common, Morgan Mann and Libby Wright—started recently and has swiftly taken off since holding a widely-attended interest meeting on Sept. 24. With over 50 students crowding in Chef Xavier Patterson’s (Chef X) classroom during that first meeting, the co-presidents happily realized that the club size was larger than expected.

“I did not expect the outcome of our interest meeting. I figured we would have a few people show up,” junior and co-president Libby Wright said. ”I was pleasantly surprised when all those people were genuinely interested in our club.”

With around 20-30 consistent attendants, the club plans to start baking soon after receiving approval from administration for their supply funding and baking needs. The club has yet to set a date which is dependent on the availability of Chef X and his classroom kitchen.

In the future the club plans to have bake sale fundraisers, leadership positions such as a kitchen manager and baking coordinator, and of course, lots of baked goods to provide to the Ronald McDonald House located in Chapel Hill.

“We were thinking of making a club during our first period, and then thought about baking as an idea,” junior and co-president Kylie Common said. “The suggestion of giving the goods to homeless shelters came to us after, and gave us a community service aspect to it.”

The club plans to start with just baking cookies and simple desserts, but are open to suggestions from students later in the year.

Junior and co-president Morgan Mann encourages more students to sign up for The Mix Up.

“It’s something different, for a good cause and it will teach you how to bake. Plus you get to eat some treats and hang out with friends, what’s better than that!”
