New Classes Offered Starting Fall 2023

Each year, new classes become an integral part of sustaining Northwood by keeping students engaged with new curriculums. In the 2022-2023 school year, Northwood will focus on offering five new classes: Counseling and Mental Health I, Culinary Arts and Hospitality I, Animal Science II, Developing Your Leadership Potential and AP Art History.

Counseling and Mental Health I will be geared towards understanding how to create healthy relationships throughout different stages of life. It will focus on understanding mental health, family and friend dynamics and effective communication. This course will be available to students of any grade level and will reinforce language arts, social studies and technology skills. Contact Ms. Youngblood (wyoungblood@chatham.k12.nc.us) for more information.

Culinary Arts and Hospitality I will be a CTE course that is an alternative to Foods and Nutrition I. Foods and Nutrition I focuses on nutrition and the fundamentals of cooking, while Culinary Arts and Hospitality I will focus on foundational cooking skills, including soups, sauces, baking, plating, food service and recipe development. This course is geared towards students who are interested in going into the culinary industry and want to develop more advanced cooking techniques. Culinary Arts and Hospitality I is an entry-level course and there are no prerequisites for the class. Contact Chef X (xpatterson@chatham.k12.nc.us) for more information.

Animal Science II will be offered through the agriculture department and taught by either Laura Smith or Lindsay Davis. It will focus on livestock production management, as opposed to Animal Science II Small Animal, which focuses on the veterinary care of small animals. Either Animal Science II course is ideal for students who have already taken Animal Science I and would like to further their agricultural education. Contact Ms. Smith (ljsmith@chatham.k12.nc.us) or Ms. Davis (ldavis2@chatham.k12.nc.us) for more information.

Developing Your Leadership Potential will be offered through the English Department and taught by Terrance Foushee. It is ideally for students who want to develop their leadership skills, specifically in a school club or organization. This course will focus on the discovery and development of skills in areas of communication, project planning, organization, service learning, formal correspondence, time management and team dynamics. This course will only be offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Contact Mr. Foushee (tmfoushee@chatham.k12.nc.us) for more information.

AP Art History is ideally for students wanting to learn more about art in a historical context. Students will learn how to critique and discuss new works of art based on their exposure to different types of art. AP Studio Art, on the other hand, focuses on developing an advanced-level portfolio over time where students investigate a topic and create art in response. World History is a prerequisite to AP Art History and will only be offered to juniors and seniors. Contact Ms. Cecchini (jcecchini@chatham.k12.nc.us) for more information.
