Springing into Prom Season: What do you need to know?

Attention Students! Northwood High School’s prom will be on Saturday, Apr. 27 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center. Tickets will only be sold online and will go on sale through the “Online Payments” section of the Northwood homepage starting on Mar. 18 and will last through Apr. 12 for $20. There will be 500 tickets available for purchase. Ticket pickup will take place on Wednesday, Apr. 24 and Thursday, Apr. 25 after school from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. in Spanish teacher, Heather Algiere’s room. This year’s theme is “Sparkle Soiree,” which has a black and gold color palette. While not all the secret plans for the evening can be shared yet, this year’s prom will include a photo booth, with lots of candles, gold wrappings, hangings and overlays. The Northwood High School Prom Committee has been holding meetings since Nov. 28. Algiere, who has been advising the committee for three years, has spearheaded the creation of previous prom themes, including “Garden of Lights” and “Era of Glam.”

While Northwood offers other dances, such as the Homecoming and Heart Ball, the prom continues to be the most well-attended dance of the year.

“Everyone just really likes the hype about prom,” senior Grace Lake said. “It’s fun to pick out a dress, take pictures, and go to a dance with a theme.”

Algiere said that while “school events no longer serve as the primary way for kids to spend time together,” prom still remains popular because “it’s a big production.”

There are so many aspects that make up a prom, such as buying formal clothes, picking a good hairstyle and finding a spot to eat and take pictures.

Junior Shelby Brinker, who went to prom last year, agreed, and said that her favorite parts were “going to the hairdresser and putting on my makeup before we went out.”

Junior Mary Lacey Eubanks, who has not attended a prom, said that some of the things she’s most excited about are “the dance […] and then also to see all of my friends and classmates dressed up.”

An important step in planning for prom is finding a date, a friend or a group to go with. If you are thinking of making a “Promposal,” which Google Dictionary defines as “an elaborately staged request to be someone’s date to a prom,” ask yourself these key questions first:

1) What type of things does my friend, significant other, or group enjoy? These things will help you come up with a theme for the Promposal.

2) Does my friend, significant other, or group like events that are flashy and public, or do they prefer to keep things low-key? Nobody wants to be startled with the “big ask”.

3) Finally, what is my friend’s, significant other’s, or group’s favorite place to hang out? Asking in the right place will add to the good memories that have already been established there.

As you’re putting together your final plans for prom night, keep in mind the great local businesses Pittsboro has to offer as you are choosing where to shop, eat and get ready. Try corsages from Blossom Floral Artistry and dinner at S&T’s Soda Shoppe. Need more inspiration? Seventeen magazine’s website has a whole prom section!
