Northwood Student Council Promotes Unity Throughout School

This year, Northwood’s student council is taking a new approach after a challenging year.

“[We hope to] ignite unity within Northwood’s community by creating engaging opportunities,” Student Body President Kennedy Poston said.

With this new goal, student council has been trying to create many activities and events to promote a fun and inclusive environment for all, like the homecoming pep rally and dance, Trail of Terror, Spirit Week, Dunk-a-Teacher and various other senior events.

“It’s awesome being able to be a part of an organization that makes the school a little bit better for everyone,” senior senator Josh Friedman said. “Without a student council, the Northwood administrators can only fix so many things.”

“Bringing issues from the students’ perspectives allows us to improve Northwood as much as possible,” Friedman said.

Ideas for events like movie night, more student grilling opportunities, and even a video game tournament have been brought to council’s attention.

“I hope people know that the Northwood Student Council is very focused on providing fun opportunities for building relationships and helping students make the most out of their high school experience,” junior class president Catherine Hall said.

With being back into the swing of things after a year with very few school events, people around Northwood have been noticing student council’s dedication to making school worthwhile this year.

“This year you’ve really been able to tell the impact of council,” sophomore Emma Mortimer said. “Especially with senior events and other things school spirit wise, you’ve really been able to tell a difference.”

Student council’s motto for this year— “Ignite unity within Northwoods community by creating engaging opportunities”— is also in harmony with Northwood’s new slogan ALL IN, which promotes the idea of committing to a memorable and inclusive school year

Thanks to the council and administration who are planning things to get Northwood back on track, many believe that the future of Northwood seems like it is taking a turn for the better.

“I’ve definitely noticed that kids have been a lot more excited to go out and do things such as extracurriculars or after school social activities like football games, and of course student council-led events,” an anonymous student said.

While at times challenging, council is putting their best foot forward for their school.

“Student council doesn’t have a magic wand that can fix every problem at Northwood, but we work hard with each other and administration to help make Northwood a better place for all students,” senior class president Caroline Murrell said. “We love to get suggestions on what we should bring up to administration, what activities we should plan and how we can be a better council.”

Student council members say they work hard to ensure that everyone feels accommodated for and that the requests of students are listened to.

“The members of council work really hard to plan projects that will help better our schools and without student council, there would not be an organization to do that,” Poston said.

If student council wants Northwood students to know anything, it’s that they are here for them. They say that every request is taken into consideration and thought about supportively.

“I want the student body to know that student council represents each and every one of them.” Junior Officer of Class Involvement Lily Kate Witcher said. “We weren’t elected to council just to sit around and plan things for our personal enjoyment. We are here to address the things that the school wants to see. If people have an issue or question or an idea that can improve Northwood, we want them to please bring it to any of us on council so we can try our best to make it happen.”
