The Science Behind Listenting to Your Favorite Tunes

Listening to music has been a favorite pastime throughout human history, and high school students are no exception. The existence of music has been traced back to 250,000 years ago, and it has evolved in many ways to get to where it is to today. Northwood students are frequently listening to music between classes or while completing assignments. Other than offering a nice distraction, music offers many other benefits to students and anyone who listens to it.

Back to School: Northwood Starts In-Person Learning

After almost a year of distance learning, Northwood students and teachers were invited back to school beginning Feb. 1 under Plan B. Although distance learning has led to several challenges, it has also been challenging for school staff to make in-person learning happen. Many safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have been put in place since students’ return to Northwood’s campus. When students arrive at the building they are asked a series of COVID-related questions and their temperature is taken. Then, students are required to immediately report to their first period class. Every hallway has social distancing markers and desks are wiped down after each class.

Local Elections in NC

North Carolina had a general election on November 3, 2020, with early voting options and mail-in voting. The Chatham County Board of County Commissioners is a group of five members elected for four-year, staggered terms. They work closely with departments whose directors are selected by state boards, like the Board of Elections or university officials. They also have a voice in determining important policies affecting our daily lives, including land use planning, recreation, utilities, building inspections and permits, waste disposal and recycling, libraries, tourism and emergency response. The Board of Health and the Economic Development Corporation, and the Board of Social Services members are appointed by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. They also help with funding education at the K-12 and community college levels.

Harmful Blue Light

Because Northwood students are completing their schoolwork at home this semester, students are on their computers a good portion of the day. When school was in person, computers were often only used a fraction of the time spent in each class. Now, students must use their laptop to access all of their learning. They’re also often up late submitting assignments. Finishing assignments at night subjects students to copious amounts of blue light from their devices’ screens. Many students also are on other electronic devices at night. Large amounts of exposure to blue light have been found to have negative effects on teenagers’ health.

Sports Are Back

When students at Northwood aren’t busy completing assignments, many are practicing their favorite sports. Sports at Northwood include football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball, swim, track and field, cross country, lacrosse and wrestling. Sports are an important activity for students because they offer health benefits, teamwork skills and a distraction from everyday stressors.

What Foods to Eat to Retain the Most Information

During this time of online learning, students are expected to learn and retain the information they are given in order to do well in their classes. The way most students prepare for an upcoming test or quiz is by studying the material they are given. Studying can be done in many different ways, although some strategies may be more effective than others. But rather than looking at the different ways to study material, let’s look at another factor that research shows has a direct impact on how much information students retain while studying: the food they eat.
