Northwood Athletes Share Outlook for ’21-’22 Sports

As Northwood students begin to settle in comfortably to their new class schedules, clubs and extracurricular activities, the fall sports season is back in full force. Games for most athletics are already underway, with a full list of events to buy tickets for, and a growing prominence of jerseys in the hallways. A few student athletes spoke with The Omniscient about how they feel about their personal athletic performance and this year’s outlook for their teams.

Womens’ Swim Team Places Third in Big 8 Conference, Mens’ Swim Team Places Fifth

On Wednesday, Jan. 27, Northwood’s Varsity Swim Team traveled to the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, NC to compete in the Big 8 Conference Meet. The men finished fifth overall and the women finished third overall. Junior Mia Corrado tied for the most individual points scored for women’s swimming, which makes her one of the Big 8 Conference Women’s Swimmers of the Year.

Northwood Girl’s Basketball Team Wins Conference Championship Second Year In A Row

On Monday, Jan. 25, the Northwood Girl’s Basketball Team played against Chapel Hill High School at Northwood. Due to COVID guidelines, the crowd was not as big as it has been in past years. Only parents were allowed to attend and watch the game. Scores for both teams were low during the first quarter but went up at the beginning of the second quarter. Chapel Hill scored five points going into halftime. Throughout the game, Tekeyah Bland, a Northwood senior, scored 15 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate McKenna Snively, a Northwood junior scored 14 points. Throughout the second half of the game, Northwood held the lead and ended up winning the game 48-36. This win made the NHS Girl’s Basketball Team conference champions for the second year in a row.
